Activities and family time combine for learning and fun in the Raising School Ready Readers program coming to Oskaloosa this fall as Iowa State University Extension and Outreach- Mahaska County is offering a series of family literacy activity nights for parents and children ages 3-6. The program gives parents ready-to-use ideas on how to turn everyday experiences–like fixing meals, giving baths, or riding in the car–into learning activities.

Main Street is planning their annual trek around the Square starting at 4 p.m.
Main Street Trick or Treat parade around the square will not take place in 2021.
Mahaska Drug is planning their event from 4 to 8 p.m., rain date Friday, Oct. 29
Oskaloosa City-wide Trick or Treat is from 6 to 8 p.m.
Central Church is planning their Trunk or Treat event from 6 to 8 pm.
All events depend on COVID numbers in Mahaska County and subject to change.

A Little History: Halloween 2019 (also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve) occurs on the day before All Saints Day. It is a day that is dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. Halloween is celebrated annually on October 31 in the United States and throughout the world. It is “widely believed” that Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic harvest festival, Samhain, and that this Gaelic observance was Christianized by the early Church. It is believed that the celebration of Halloween only made its way to the United States in the 19th Century by immigrants from Scotland and Ireland. The commercialization of Halloween (as we know it today) began in the 1900s, when postcards and die-cut paper decorations were produced. Halloween costumes started to appear in stores in the 1930s and the custom of ‘trick-or-treat’ appeared in the 1950s.
