Mahaska Community Calendar

CALENDAR CHANGES ARE AROUND THE CORNER!

Everything Mahaska Community Calendar will be undergoing some changes and moving to a new home in 2021.
The Calendar will be redesigned and housed on the Mahaska Chamber & Development Group’s website once their new design is finalized.
We’ll notify subscribers when that site goes live and the changes are in place. Thanks for visiting!

The health and wellness of our community is a top priority, and many listed events may have new guidelines in place for the safety and well-being of area residents. Every attempt is being made to keep your Community Calendar up to date. However, confirmation of an event’s status is recommended. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this uncertain season.

    Halloween

    All day
    October 31, 2021

A Little History: Halloween 2019 (also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve) occurs on the day before All Saints Day. It is a day that is dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. Halloween is celebrated annually on October 31 in the United States and throughout the world. It is “widely believed” that Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic harvest festival, Samhain, and that this Gaelic observance was Christianized by the early Church. It is believed that the celebration of Halloween only made its way to the United States in the 19th Century by immigrants from Scotland and Ireland. The commercialization of Halloween (as we know it today) began in the 1900s, when postcards and die-cut paper decorations were produced. Halloween costumes started to appear in stores in the 1930s and the custom of ‘trick-or-treat’ appeared in the 1950s.
