    Mahaska County Master Gardeners have hosted a speaker/education series since 2005. These presentations are open to the public; there is no fee to attend. Prior registration is NOT required. Anyone who is interested in the topic is encouraged to attend. The 2018 offerings include:

    • Unconventional Fruit and Nut Crops by Tom Wahl, Red Fern Farms on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 pm
    • Your Backyard is for the Birds Learn from Devon Dietz, Linn County Master Gardener on Tuesday, March 13 at 6:30 pm
    • Slow Food is an idea, a way of living and a way of eating; come learn from Slow Food member Treva Reimer on Saturday, March 17 at 10 am.
    • Produce Basics Learn how to store, clean, prepare, and preserve various fresh fruits and vegetables (produce you grow or purchase this growing season) from Sarah Spouse, Human Science Specialist on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 pm.

    Community Garden Plots are available for 2018. Meet local community garden coordinators and fellow gardeners at the Community Garden Kick-Off to be held Tuesday April 10 at 7 pm at the Mahaska County Extension Office. Sign up for a plot, meet Master Gardener mentors, and hear community gardeners tell about experiences gardening at the community garden as well as growing their favorite garden crop at the sites. The coordinators of the sites will be in attendance.

    Friends of Mahaska County Conservation will hold its annual meeting, Monday, April 23 at 6:00 P.M. at the Iowa State Extension Building in Oskaloosa.  There will be a brief business meeting followed by presentations about the Mahaska Rec Trail and fundraising and an update on the construction of the new Environmental Learning Center at Caldwell Park. All are welcome to attend. A meal will be provided by Friends.  An RSVP is required.  Call 1-641-660-7700 or email by April 15.  Fantastic door prizes will be given away.
