    You too can become a Master Gardener if you are interested in learning about plants and gardening, attend the training program, provide 40 hours of service, and are willing to help others.

    A training will be offered this fall in Mahaska County on Tuesday evenings (September 5 to November 12) 6:30-9:30 pm.  Fee is $195.  The registration fee covers the cost of all materials.  Master Gardener training session topics include:  Animal ecology, Botany,    Entomology (study of insects), Fruit culture,  Herbaceous ornamentals, Home Landscape Design, Houseplants, IPM/Pesticides, Landscape plants, Plant pathology, Soils, Turfgrass Management, Vegetables, and Weed Management. Trainees also attend a class on Iowa State University campus Saturday October 7 or 21.

    To encourage early enrollment and insure a minimum class size the Mahaska County Master Gardeners will award a $45 scholarship to the first 6 enrollees to pay the class fee for Mahaska County Master Gardener training in 2017.  To register visit the Iowa Master Gardener website and apply online or visit the Mahaska County Extension office (212 North I Street)

    The Master Gardeners are hosting a workshop at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds (701 South I Street on making hypertufa containers. Attendees will form a rustic textured garden container utilizing Portland cement and perlite. All needed materials will be provided.  Please wear clothes suited for our task to this workshop.

    Cost for the workshop is $5. Workshop is limited to 15.  Please register by calling the Extension Office 641-673-5841 by Friday, September 1.  Younger participants who register for this workshop are asked to have an adult along help them.

Event proceeds will benefit the mammoth fossil displays in the new Mahaska County Environmental Learning Center at Caldwell Park and MCCB environmental education programs. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Mahaska County Conservation.

    Bob Wersen, owner of Interpower Corporation and Tassel Ridge Winery, will be sharing his journey as an entrepreneur and business owner. Attendees will hear a summary of both businesses, learn their histories, hear about lessons and successes experienced along the way, and perhaps be able to take home some entrepreneurial journey advice. There will also be a Q&A time.     Day of Caring exemplifies Living United by connecting businesses and organizations to those in need in the Oskaloosa community. Before the event we work to match volunteer teams to projects that best fit the team’s preferences and project needs.

All of these features are located where the old tennis courts were, on the north side of Penn Hall. The George Daily Pavilion area will serve students and alumni for years to come.     The Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter will be holding it’s 5th Annual K-9 5-K September 30. This is one of the two major fundraisers the animal shelter holds each year to raise the funds needed to care for over 900 animals that come through their doors each years. 100% of the money raised goes directly to providing care.

    Join MCCB, local conservation groups and community organizations for a whole day of hands-on outdoor activities for kids! The sessions held this year will include: Fishing, archery, outdoor survival, dutch oven cooking, bowfishing, water safety, tree identification, zip lining, .22 rifle shooting, bb gun shooting, first aid, shotgunning, retriever do demonstrations and more.

    PRE-REGISTER BY SEPTEMBER 15 and receive earl registration benefits. $10 per child if registration is received after September 15 or on the day of event. (Late registrations do not include a t-shirt and lunch).
