  • NW Bypass: Public Hearing

    A Public Hearing on the US 63 NW Bypass around Oskaloosa will be held between 6 and 8 p.m. at the Oskaloosa High School Commons, 1816 N. Third St. The purpose of the hearing is to discuss the proposed bypass route and gather public feedback on the environmental documentation, bypass route preferred alternative, and potential impacts pertaining to planned highway improvements.

    For more information on potential impact areas please view the Iowa DOT’s Potential Impact Area video online.

    The public hearing will be conducted using a combined open forum and formal format. The open forum will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. The formal hearing will be held from 7 to 8 p.m, with a presentation starting at 7 p.m. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the meeting. Oral and written statements will be accepted during both the open forum and the formal session.

    You too can become a Master Gardener if you are interested in learning about plants and gardening, attend the training program, provide 40 hours of service, and are willing to help others.

    A training will be offered this fall in Mahaska County on Tuesday evenings (September 5 to November 12) 6:30-9:30 pm.  Fee is $195.  The registration fee covers the cost of all materials.  Master Gardener training session topics include:  Animal ecology, Botany,    Entomology (study of insects), Fruit culture,  Herbaceous ornamentals, Home Landscape Design, Houseplants, IPM/Pesticides, Landscape plants, Plant pathology, Soils, Turfgrass Management, Vegetables, and Weed Management. Trainees also attend a class on Iowa State University campus Saturday October 7 or 21.

    To encourage early enrollment and insure a minimum class size the Mahaska County Master Gardeners will award a $45 scholarship to the first 6 enrollees to pay the class fee for Mahaska County Master Gardener training in 2017.  To register visit the Iowa Master Gardener website and apply online or visit the Mahaska County Extension office (212 North I Street)

    What’s the buzz?  A swarm of 300+ beekeepers from the Iowa Honey Producers Association will land in Oskaloosa for their annual meeting and convention on Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11.  The event will take place at the Gateway Church of the Nazarene and  feature keynote speakers Dr. Dennis VanEngeldorp from the University of Maryland, Dr. Marion Ellis from the University of Nebraska and Rhonda Fleming Hayes of Minnesota.  Highlights will include the crowning of the 2018 Iowa Honey Queen, cooking and photography contests, silent and live auctions, honey swap, a banquet showcasing the selection of youth scholarship recipients and awards presentation, and a wide variety of bee-related vendors will be on hand to round out this sweet event.  Registration, costs and event information available on the website: www.iowahoneyproducers.org
