Entertainment & Fine Arts

ART CENTER: The Fine Arts & Cultural Events (FACE) of Mahaska County began in 2003 under the name of Oskaloosa Arts Fellowship. Excited art enthusiasts had the idea to spread the arts to the Mahaska Community. The idea was successful. Visit FACE on line to see their activities, educational opportunities, and calendar. The Oskaloosa Art Center & Studio opened in the spring of 2017. It is located at 115 1st Ave. West in downtown Oskaloosa. Access the studio from The Alley (next to Smokey Row). The art center periodically features artists and their work quite often starting with a ‘meet the artist’ reception. Classes are held for artists of all ages including pottery. The OAC Poetry Club gives participants the opportunity to join others who share a love of words. It offers a welcoming and creative environment where present and future poets and creative writers are able to share their original work, try new forms, genres and styles of writing and play games and activities to broaden their horizons.

BAND CONCERTS: Each Thursday evening at 8 p.m. during the summer months (June-August) the Oskaloosa Municipal Band gathers in the bandstand located to perform as it has every summer since 1864. Band members warm up their instruments as people gather, armed with folding chairs and blankets. A mix of classic and popular tunes are played for the crowds as night descends on the square. Popcorn, beverages, children’s games, and other family activities are quite common on these summer evenings. It was lead for a time by Charles L. Barnhouse and was invited to play at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair. The Oskaloosa Municipal Band has been supported by tax dollars since 1921. Click here for more history of the bandstand.

PERFORMANCES: Within one brief decade, the George Daily Auditorium (1800 North 3rd Street, Oskaloosa) has become unquestionably favored among audiences, performers, and agents alike. Running a full season of professional programming, their 695-seat, state-of-the-art facility comes alive with superior entertainment. This uniquely intimate venue features top-quality productions generally reserved for larger cities without the hassle of big city traffic and crowds. Continually enrapturing audiences from all walks of life, the auditorium’s single-floor facility and affordable ticket prices make the arts accessible to all. In addition to exceptional shows, they serve as a community and educational facility featuring a multitude of area events and children’s theatre programs. The building is complete with a large meeting room, black-box theatre, and small kitchen to accommodate any needs.

SCULPTURE TOUR: Professional sculptors were invited to submit work to the Oskaloosa Sculpture Tour, and then artwork was selected for inclusion. The selection committee utilizes criteria that included suitability for family viewing, display of quality technical skills, imagination and innovation, suitability for outdoor display, durability, and soundness of construction. All sculptures not already sold are available for purchase. The Oskaloosa Sculpture Tour is made possible by area sponsors who believe in the importance of investing in community and in the arts.
